Emerging technologies driving new jobs, says MoS Jitin Prasada at Technology and Skill Development Conference

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said that emerging technologies such as drone technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity are playing a crucial role in generating new employment opportunities across the country.

Addressing the “Technology and Skill Development Conference” at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee NIELIT Extension Centre in Pilibhit on Sunday, Prasada emphasised that technology-led skill development is key to empowering youth and strengthening India’s position as a global technology leader. He attended the conference as the chief guest.

Referring to the vision of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, the minister said institutions like the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) act as a vital bridge between policy formulation and implementation. He noted that NIELIT is playing an important role in taking advanced technical education and skill development to remote and semi-urban areas, thereby expanding access to quality training.

Prasada stressed that skill development aligned with industry requirements would enhance employability and help India emerge as a global hub for technology and innovation.

The conference witnessed participation from Members of the Legislative Assembly, senior district and administrative officials, representatives from academia and industry, startup entrepreneurs, NIELIT officials and a large number of students and local youth.

A major highlight of the event was a technology exhibition by startups working in drone technologies. The startups showcased drone-based solutions for agriculture, crop monitoring, pesticide spraying, land surveying, mapping, disaster management, surveillance and logistics, offering participants practical insights into real-world applications and the growing role of startups in driving innovation.

During the event, the minister inaugurated a state-of-the-art IoT laboratory at NIELIT Pilibhit. The newly established facility aims to provide hands-on, industry-oriented training to students from Pilibhit and nearby regions. It will offer practical exposure to smart sensors, embedded systems, automation and real-time IoT applications, thereby improving technical competence and employability.

The IoT laboratory is also expected to help bridge the gap between academia and industry, promote innovation-led learning and encourage entrepreneurship among local youth, while providing startups and innovators access to modern infrastructure and technical guidance.

The conference also featured a special workshop on cybersecurity, with experts discussing cybercrime awareness, prevention of digital fraud, data privacy, safe internet practices and emerging cyber threats. The workshop drew participation from students, teachers, government officials and citizens, enhancing awareness about secure and responsible digital behaviour.

Several technical sessions, interactive discussions and awareness programmes were also organised to share information on emerging technologies, government skill development initiatives and opportunities in the electronics and IT sector.

The conference concluded with a reaffirmation of NIELIT’s commitment to strengthening the digital and technological ecosystem in rural and semi-urban regions and empowering youth through skill development, innovation and entrepreneurship.
