The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday said that rainfall activity is set to intensify over parts of southern India, even as conditions become favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of the country over the next two days. Simultaneously, easterly and northeasterly winds are expected to establish over the southern peninsula and the south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, paving the way for the onset of the Northeast Monsoon during the same period.
According to the latest update from IMD, enhanced rainfall activity with isolated heavy showers is likely to continue over Kerala and Tamil Nadu for the next seven days. In the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.
IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.
Meanwhile, the weather in Delhi-NCR is expected to remain largely clear over the next four days, with mild mornings and slightly below-normal maximum temperatures.
On Tuesday, Delhi is likely to witness a mainly clear sky with morning haze or mist. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 33°C, with northwesterly surface winds blowing at speeds of 5-10 kmph in the afternoon, gradually decreasing in the evening.
October 15 is expected to see temperatures rise slightly, with an expected range of 32-34°C during the day and 18-20°C during the night. Winds are expected to shift from the southwest in the morning to the northwest in the afternoon.
On October 16, maximum temperatures are expected to stay between 32°C and 34°C, while minimum temperatures will range from 19°C to 21°C. Winds will remain light to moderate, predominantly from the north.
October 17 will also bring clear skies and mild mornings, with daytime temperatures between 31°C and 33°C. Northerly to northwesterly winds will prevail, picking up during the afternoon before easing in the evening.
With the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and the expected onset of the northeast monsoon, southern India is likely to see an active spell of rain, while northern regions, including Delhi-NCR, are set for stable and pleasant weather conditions.
