“Whether it is strengthening institutions like the G20, fighting climate change or playing a bigger role in the global supply chain, India is being welcomed as a part of every global solution,” said PM Modi on Tuesday at the 38th Convocation ceremony of Bharathidasan University at Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.
PM Modi also gave away awards to the meritorious students of the university during the ceremony.
Message for the Youth:
Addressing the students, PM Modi focussed on the youths of the country. He said that youth means energy and is the ability to work with speed, skill and scale. He also expressed confidence in the ability of young people to make the years till 2047 the most important in our history. He said, “The science you learn can help a farmer in your village, the technology you learn can help solve complex problems. The business management you learn can help run businesses and ensure income growth for others. The economics you learn can help reduce poverty…”

PM Modi also said that in the spirit of constant learning, it is important to proactively work on unlearning, re-skilling, and upskilling because in a rapidly transforming world either you drive change or change drives you.
Role of University:
PM Modi also reiterated the important role that universities play in giving direction to any nation. He stated that our nation and civilisation have always been centred around knowledge and praised how our ancient universities were great houses for learning. “Some of the ancient universities such as Nalanda and Taxila are well known. Similarly, there are references to other places like Kanchipuram housing great universities, and Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Madurai were also great seats of learning. Students from across the world used to come these places,” he said.
PM Modi also said that our education system was targeted immediately when our nation was attacked. In the early 20th century, people like Mahatma Gandhi, Madan Mohan Malviya and Sir Annamalai Chettiar started universities which were the hubs of knowledge and nationalism during the freedom struggle.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to the South of the country and will visit Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Kerala over two days, on January 2 and 3.
