The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) presented 13 rangers and ranger teams with the 2025 International Ranger Awards, recognizing their exceptional courage and dedication to nature conservation.
The awards celebrate the resilience and perseverance of rangers who protect forests and wildlife worldwide, while raising public awareness about their critical role. Winners received financial grants ranging from USD 5,000 to 25,000 to support conservation work in their regions. This year’s recipients represent 13 countries, including Ukraine, Burkina Faso, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh attended the ceremony and released the report “Guardians of the Wild,” which pays tribute to frontline conservation heroes safeguarding forests and wildlife globally.
Speaking at the event, Singh emphasized the vital role forest rangers play in ensuring that the world’s natural heritage remains secure. “Forest rangers are the unsung heroes of conservation. Their dedication and sacrifice ensure that the rich wildlife heritage of our planet continues to thrive,” he said.
He noted that countries around the world have adopted policies to support conservation efforts, but the success of these initiatives depends on the tireless work of rangers. “Their responsibilities go far beyond patrolling forests – they monitor wildlife populations, fight forest fires, and counter emerging threats to ecosystems,” he added.Highlighting the dangers faced by rangers, Singh said they confront not only wild animals but also illegal poachers and organized gangs engaged in wildlife trafficking and illegal logging. “Many have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their bravery and commitment to conservation deserve the world’s deepest respect,” he stated.
Singh also commended the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Wildlife Trust of India for recognizing these conservation heroes. He said, “Such recognition is essential to honor their commitment and to inspire continued global action to protect biodiversity.”
The “Guardians of the Wild” report documents the challenges faced by rangers and underscores the growing international awareness of their indispensable role in preserving global biodiversity and forest ecosystems.
