The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that a depression over the southeast Arabian Sea and a low-pressure area over south interior Karnataka and its neighbourhood are likely to influence weather conditions over peninsular India in the coming days.
According to IMD, formation of another low-pressure area over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal is likely around October 24.
Under these systems’ influence, isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka on October 23 and 24, and over south interior Karnataka on Thursday. Similar conditions are expected in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on October 23 and again on October 27 and 28. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Tamil Nadu and Konkan & Goa during October 23–24.
The IMD advised residents and local authorities in the affected regions to take precautionary measures in view of the possibility of waterlogging, local flooding, and reduced visibility.
During the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on October 23, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Tamil Nadu, while heavy rainfall occurred over parts of Coastal Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.
IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rain as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm.
Meanwhile, weather conditions in Delhi-NCR are expected to remain stable through the week. From October 23 to 26, the region is likely to experience mainly clear skies with mist or haze during morning hours. The maximum temperature will range between 31°C and 33°C, and the minimum temperature will hover around 17°C to 20°C, which is 1-3°C above normal.
Surface winds will predominantly blow from the northwest direction during the afternoon at speeds up to 10-15 kmph, weakening slightly in the evening and night hours. On October 26, skies may turn partly cloudy towards evening, but overall dry weather conditions will prevail.
