IMD issues alerts for heavy rains, cyclonic storms in Gujarat and eastern India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the Saurashtra and Kachchh regions of Gujarat, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until August 31.

A deep depression currently situated over Saurashtra and Kachchh is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm. This system, presently located 60 km northwest of Bhuj, Gujarat, is forecasted to move west-southwest and strengthen into a cyclonic storm by August 30, continuing its path away from the Indian coast over the next two days.

Wind speeds along the Gujarat and Pakistan coasts are predicted to reach 65-75 kmph, gusting up to 85 kmph, from August 30 to September 1.

Simultaneously, a low-pressure system has developed over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify into a depression as it approaches north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts over the next few days.

Odisha is forecasted to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 29 to 31, with some areas likely to experience extremely heavy downpours on August 30. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is also expected to receive significant precipitation during this period.

The IMD has warned of the significant risks posed by these weather systems, including localized flooding, reduced visibility, and potential damage to vulnerable structures.

Authorities have advised caution, recommending the regulation of offshore operations and surface transport, avoidance of waterlogged areas and vulnerable structures, support for horticultural crops, and ensuring proper drainage in agricultural fields.

Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into affected areas of the Bay of Bengal until August 31.
