IMD issues fresh heatwave alert for northwest India and Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heatwave conditions across northwest India and Bihar for the next five days, and in eastern and central India from May 18.

Earlier, the weather agency warned of a fresh spell of heatwave in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, till May 18.

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in West Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana from May 16 to 20; in East Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh from May 17 to 20; and in north Madhya Pradesh from May 18 to 20. Further, severe heatwave conditions are likely in parts of West Rajasthan from May 17 to 20, and in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi from May 18 to 20.

The weather agency said that a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan region from May 17, bringing isolated light to moderate rainfall activity over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from May 17 to 19.

Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Sikkim on May 16, 19 and 20; in Arunachal Pradesh from May 16 to 19, and in Assam and Meghalaya on May 17 and 18 due to a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam.

Another cyclonic circulation and trough may bring isolated heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal, Kerala-Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka from May 16 to 20; in Coastal Karnataka from May 17 to 19; in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema on May 16, and in Lakshadweep from May 19 to 20.

In the southern Peninsular India, a wet spell with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to continue till May 22.

Furthermore, the IMD has predicted the southwest monsoon to advance over the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and Nicobar Islands around May 19.
