India affirms commitment to freedom of navigation in international waters, says Rajnath Singh at ASEAN defence ministers’ meet

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated India's unwavering commitment to the freedom of navigation, overflight, and unimpeded lawful commerce in international waters, aligning with established international laws. Speaking at the 10th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting – Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Jakarta on Thursday, Singh emphasized the importance of respecting international regulations.

During his address, the defence minister urged for active collaboration among the 10-member regional bloc and its dialogue partners to foster peace, prosperity, and security in the region. Singh highlighted the centrality of ASEAN and commended its pivotal role in promoting dialogue and consensus within the region. He called for the implementation of regional security initiatives that are consultative and development-oriented, stressing the need to reflect a broader consensus among various stakeholders.

Singh pledged to promote practical, forward-looking, and result-oriented cooperation with ADMM-Plus to enhance maritime security in the region. Reaffirming India’s dedication to collaborating with ASEAN and its dialogue partners for ensuring peace, prosperity, and security, Singh quoted Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “there is no way to peace, peace is the only way.”

The defence minister expressed appreciation for the enthusiastic participation of ASEAN member states in India-ASEAN activities. He highlighted initiatives such as the Initiative for Women in UN Peacekeeping Operations and the Initiative for Marine Plastic Pollution Response.

Recognizing the severity of terrorism as a threat to international peace and security, including within the ASEAN region, India proposed co-chairing the EWG on Counter-Terrorism. This proposal received endorsement from ADMM-Plus, underscoring the shared concern regarding terrorism among countries in the region.
