India and Malta held the fourth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Valletta on March 27, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exploring ways to deepen cooperation across key sectors.
The consultations were co-chaired by Ambassador Sibi George, Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Christopher Cutajar, Permanent Secretary in Malta’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the visit, Sibi George called on Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg, where both sides discussed avenues to strengthen ongoing cooperation and expand the scope of bilateral engagement. He also met Brigadier Clinton J O’Neill to explore ways to enhance defence and security collaboration.
Both countries expressed satisfaction over the steady progress in ties, especially as they marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025. Officials noted a recent upswing in high-level exchanges, which has contributed to strengthening bilateral engagement.
Talks during the consultations focused on expanding cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, tourism, technology and innovation, maritime affairs, and education and culture. The two sides also discussed strengthening economic ties in light of the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, with a focus on sectors including ICT, healthcare, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and education.
In addition, India and Malta exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and agreed to continue cooperation in multilateral forums.
During his visit, Sibi George also interacted with business leaders in Malta to explore opportunities for enhancing trade, investment, and commercial partnerships between the two countries.
