India, Mozambique, and Tanzania conclude trilateral naval exercise

The second edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise concluded successfully at Nacala, Mozambique, on March 28. The week-long exercise aimed at boosting maritime cooperation and interoperability between the navies of the three nations.

During the IMT TRILAT 24 Exercise, INS Tir and Sujata participated in joint exercises, training sessions, and collaborative activities from March 21 to 28. These activities provided valuable opportunities for the Indian, Mozambican, and Tanzanian navies to exchange knowledge, enhance capabilities, and strengthen maritime security in the region.

The exercise comprised two phases. The initial harbor phase, held from March 21 to 24, featured intensive training sessions onboard INS Tir at Zanzibar and INS Sujata at Maputo. Training included vital aspects such as Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS), Damage Control, Firefighting Drills, communication procedures, and medical lectures, including CPR demonstrations and casualty evacuation (CASEVAC).

The sea phase began on March 24, with INS Tir and INS Sujata hosting sea riders from the Tanzanian and Mozambican navies, respectively. Joint operations with Mozambique Naval ship Namatili and Tanzanian naval ship Fatundu demonstrated significant synergy and sustained efforts among the regional navies, aligning with the vision of SAGAR (Security & Growth for All in the Region). Activities at sea included simulated VBSS exercises, night maneuvers, and training for sea riders on bridge watch keeping, damage control, and firefighting. Additionally, the ships conducted joint surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) off Tanzania and Mozambique in the designated area of operation.

The closing ceremony, held onboard INS Tir and INS Sujata at Nacala, Mozambique, was attended by representatives from all three navies. The event highlighted the successful collaboration, understanding of maritime capabilities, and shared objectives achieved during the exercise. It underscored the commitment to continued collaboration towards maritime security and regional stability, emphasizing India’s role as the preferred security partner.
