India reaches historic milestone of 100 GW solar power capacity

India has reached a major milestone by surpassing 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, signaling significant progress toward energy independence and a sustainable future. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership for this achievement. This milestone strengthens India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and marks a crucial step toward the country’s goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, as highlighted in a press release from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Joshi highlighted the revolutionary impact of initiatives like solar panels, solar parks, and rooftop solar projects in transforming India’s energy landscape. He praised the success of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which is helping households embrace rooftop solar energy, empowering citizens with clean, sustainable power. India’s solar sector has seen an unprecedented growth of 3,450% over the past decade, with installed capacity increasing from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

Solar energy accounts for 47% of India’s total installed renewable energy capacity. In 2024 alone, a record 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh leading the way in utility-scale installations. The rooftop solar sector also witnessed impressive growth, with a 53% increase in new installations.

India’s solar manufacturing capacity has also surged from 2 GW in 2014 to 60 GW in 2024, positioning the country as a global leader in solar module production. With strong policy support, India is on track to achieve 100 GW of solar module production capacity by 2030.
