Indian Railways has approved a series of infrastructure projects worth ₹1,364.45 crore aimed at strengthening safety systems, modernising signalling, and enhancing communication networks across multiple zones.
The approved works focus on the deployment of Kavach, expansion of optical fibre communication (OFC) networks, and replacement of outdated signalling systems with advanced electronic interlocking.
As part of the initiative, Kavach Version 4.0 will be installed on 232 locomotives in the Southern Railway at a cost of ₹208.81 crore. The move is expected to significantly strengthen train collision avoidance capabilities and improve operational safety.
To support modern signalling and Kavach rollout, communication infrastructure will be upgraded in the Northern Railway with an investment of ₹400.86 crore. The project includes laying 2×48 fibre OFC cables across more than 3,200 route kilometres spanning Ambala, Delhi, and Lucknow divisions, enhancing system reliability and capacity.
Similarly, the North Central Railway will see the installation of a 2×48 fibre OFC network over 2,196 route kilometres at a cost of ₹176.76 crore. This upgrade is aimed at supporting Kavach deployment and improving communication on high-density routes across Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Agra divisions.
In another key development, South Central Railway will undergo signalling modernisation with ₹578.02 crore allocated for replacing panel interlocking systems with electronic interlocking at 49 stations. These upgrades, covering Guntakal and Nanded divisions, are expected to reduce manual intervention and enhance operational safety.
The Ministry of Railways said the projects are part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise its network with a strong focus on safety, reliability, and capacity enhancement. The integration of advanced technologies like Kavach and electronic interlocking, along with robust communication systems, is expected to significantly improve efficiency and ensure safer train operations across the country.
