Indian Railways has significantly strengthened its telecom and digital infrastructure in 2025-26, rolling out a range of AI-driven and automated solutions aimed at improving passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience.
A key development has been the expansion of real-time passenger information systems, with automatic train announcements now operational at 1,405 railway stations. These systems are integrated with the National Train Enquiry System, ensuring timely and accurate updates for passengers through electronic display boards, coach guidance systems, and public address networks.
In a major boost to safety, AI-enabled video surveillance systems have been deployed across 1,874 stations. Equipped with advanced analytics, these systems can automatically detect suspicious activities such as intrusion and loitering, while facial recognition technology enables real-time monitoring and identification.
Indian Railways has also enhanced its communication backbone through the deployment of Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology at 1,396 stations. This high-capacity network supports mission-critical operations, including reservation systems, freight management, and supervisory control systems, while enabling centralized access to surveillance data and improved coordination between stations.
To address communication challenges in difficult terrains, tunnel communication systems are being installed across key railway projects, including the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. These systems ensure uninterrupted radio connectivity between personnel inside tunnels and control centres, strengthening safety and operational coordination.
The Ministry of Railways said these initiatives reflect Indian Railways’ ongoing push towards a modern, technology-driven ecosystem aligned with the Digital India vision. The integration of artificial intelligence, advanced communication systems, and passenger-centric services is expected to further enhance efficiency, safety, and convenience across the national rail network.
