Indian stock markets open lower amid broad-based selling

Indian stock markets opened lower on Tuesday, extending Monday’s decline as investors trimmed positions amid weak global cues, sustained foreign fund outflows, and pressure in mid- and small-cap stocks. The selling was broad-based, with losses seen across major sectors including banking, metal, and IT.

The Sensex fell over 700 points to trade below 84,400, while the Nifty tumbled below 25,800, led by losses in banking, metal, and IT stocks.

The benchmark Nifty 50 index opened at 25,867.10, down 93.45 points or 0.36 per cent, while the BSE Sensex began the day at 84,742.87, declining 359.82 points or 0.42 per cent.

Broad market pressure was visible across indices, with the Nifty 100 falling 0.56 per cent, the Nifty MidCap losing 0.81 per cent, and the Nifty SmallCap declining 0.84 per cent, reflecting widespread selling.

Sectoral indices on the NSE also weakened. Nifty Media, Metal, and IT recorded losses of over 1 per cent each, while the Nifty Auto index slipped 0.77 per cent, Nifty Pharma declined 0.44 per cent, and the Nifty PSU Bank index fell 0.72 per cent.
