Indonesia’s Mount Ibu spews ash cloud 6 km high, villages evacuated

Indonesia’s Mount Ibu erupted in the early hours of Monday (May 27) morning, sending black and grey volcanic ash columns 6 km (3.5 miles) into the sky, according to the country’s volcanology agency, PVMBG.

At least 1,800 residents in seven villages were evacuated, according to local authorities, who have recommended that a seven-kilometre radius be cleared.

Ibu’s activities follow a series of eruptions of different volcanos in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and has 127 active volcanos.
