Leaders worldwide condemn killing of U.S. activist Charlie Kirk

Political leaders across the United States and abroad reacted with shock and grief on Wednesday after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist, commentator and ally of former President Donald Trump. Kirk was shot while addressing an outdoor event at a Utah university.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump described Kirk as “great and even legendary,” praising his connection with America’s youth. “He was loved and admired by all, especially me,” Trump said, extending condolences to Kirk’s wife and family. Vice President JD Vance offered a brief message of prayer, while Joe Biden said “there is no place in our country for this kind of violence,” calling for an end to political attacks. Former President Barack Obama also condemned the shooting as “despicable violence” that undermines democracy.

Tributes poured in from Kirk’s allies. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called him a “fellow warrior for Christ and for America,” while Donald Trump Jr. said, “I love you brother. We will not ever be silenced.” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Kirk’s “voice was a beacon for millions of young Americans,” and Republican National Committee chairman Joe Gruters described the attack as “utterly appalling.”

Expressions of grief also came from international leaders. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Kirk a “lion-hearted friend of Israel” who “stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization.” Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the killing a “heinous murder” and a “deep wound for democracy.” UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, French authorities, and Polish President Karol Nawrocki each denounced the violence, stressing that such acts undermine democratic foundations.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen described the killing as “horrific,” while Dutch politician Geert Wilders hailed Kirk’s political stance, repeating his words on Europe and Islam.

As tributes continued to flood in, U.S. Senator Mike Lee of Utah called the shooting “a cowardly act of violence” and vowed that “the terrorists will not win. Charlie will.”
