Meghalaya CM meets PM Modi to discuss state’s development agenda

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the state’s development trajectory, future growth plans and areas requiring continued support from the Centre.

During the meeting, Sangma conveyed his gratitude for the Prime Minister’s wishes on Meghalaya Statehood Day and thanked him for his continued engagement with the state. He also appreciated Modi’s recognition of Meghalaya’s unique living heritage, particularly the national acknowledgement and global nomination of the Living Root Bridge Cultural Landscape, which has brought international attention to indigenous knowledge systems and sustainable practices.

Briefing the Prime Minister on recent developments, the Chief Minister highlighted Meghalaya’s improving economic performance and progress across key human development indicators. He noted significant improvements in maternal health outcomes and overall human development, driven by focused interventions and community-based programmes.

Sangma outlined steps taken to strengthen the rural economy, including the establishment of large processing units and improved market linkages aimed at doubling farmers’ income. He also updated the Prime Minister on the New Shillong City project, envisioned as a modern and sustainable urban centre to support long-term growth.

Tourism was another key area of discussion, with the Chief Minister pointing to the expansion of the sector through private participation and community-led initiatives that generate livelihoods while preserving local culture and ecology. He also briefed Modi on preparations for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027, describing it as an opportunity to upgrade sports infrastructure and showcase Meghalaya nationally.

The meeting included discussions on sustaining economic momentum in smaller North Eastern Region states, continued central support for capital investment, enhancement of the externally aided projects ceiling for Meghalaya, infrastructure development, fiscal empowerment and long-term measures to strengthen the state’s economic foundations.

Sangma submitted documents outlining Meghalaya’s development progress and future vision, including Vision 2032 for sustained economic growth, and proposals seeking continued support from the Union government in line with the national vision of Viksit Bharat. The Prime Minister assured continued support for Meghalaya’s development aspirations, the Chief Minister said.
