The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to rural resilience with a historic ₹86,000 crore allocation for MGNREGA in FY 2025–26, the highest since the scheme began, reflecting steadfast support for livelihood security across Bharat. As of 23 July 2025, ₹45,783 crore has been released, including ₹37,912 crore earmarked for wages, ensuring timely benefits for rural families.
MGNREGA is delivering results on the ground: in FY 2024–25, it generated 290.60 crore person-days of employment across 15.99 crore households, with 99.79% of households demanding work receiving it, showcasing the scheme’s responsiveness. Women’s participation continues to be a hallmark of inclusion, rising from 48% in FY 2013–14 to 58.15% in FY 2024–25, involving 440.7 lakh women.
Beyond jobs, MGNREGA is building assets, infrastructure, and equity. In Assam, a brick-lined irrigation canal improved water access and generated 1,134 man-days of local employment, illustrating its capacity for impactful implementation. To bolster worker capabilities, Project UNNATI has trained 90,894 MGNREGA workers by 31 March 2025, aiming to reach 2 lakhs, and empower them to land beyond wage work.
Governance and transparency have been enhanced through digital innovation. Aadhaar-based payment systems now cover 99.94% of MGNREGA wage disbursals, with 13.45 crore active workers linked to the Aadhaar system and 13.05 crore under APBS (Aadhaar Payment Bridge System). The scheme tracks progress accurately with tools like the Yuktdhara portal, JALDOOT, JANMANREGA, and NMMS apps, while 6.26 crore assets have been geo-tagged, enabling real-time monitoring and accountability.
Further, rigorous checks ensure scheme integrity: 58,826 duplicate or fake job cards were canceled in FY 2024–25 following Aadhaar verification. Community engagement is sustained with social audits mandated twice annually and awareness-building efforts like IEC campaigns and Rozgar Diwas, all enriching transparency and ownership at the grassroots. Equally instrumental is Mission Amrit Sarovar, which has built over 68,000 water bodies, exceeded its 50,000 target, and reflects an inclusive government approach.
In sum, with record allocation, soaring women’s participation, diversified asset creation, digital and institutional reforms, MGNREGA has truly emerged as a cornerstone of rural empowerment, infrastructure development, and livelihood assurance, delivering not just jobs but a more equitable, resilient, and inclusive rural India.
