In Nepal, the monsoon season has brought various challenges and havoc due to the heavy rainfall and flooding. Eighty-three people have so far died in disaster-related incidents, including landslides and floods, triggered by relentless rains across the country.
The Police Headquarters stated that 33 men, 25 women and 25 children have died in such incidents in various places of the country from June 10 till this morning.
106 people have been injured and five persons, including three women and two men, are missing in floods and landslides during this period. Among those injured, 51 are men, 36 women and 19 children.
Similarly, 384 cattle have died in these incidents during this period. 131 houses and 54 cattle sheds have been damaged due to the flooding and landslides. Several acres of land have been buried in debris. Floods and landslides have damaged one school and two government office buildings. Forty-one bridges have been swept away.
Floods in rivers, including the Mahakali, have displaced 900 families in Kanchanpur district of Sudurpaschim province on Monday this week. According to the Kanchanpur District Police Office, 3,293 members of 891 households were relocated to safer locations.
As water level comes down in inundated areas, people have started returning on Wednesday. So far 5,428 police personnel have been mobilized for rescue of those people affected by the disasters.
The Nepal Police Headquarters stated that 2,954 families have been displaced throughout the country in the 1,028 disaster-related incidents triggered by the incessant rains. These incidents caused losses equivalent to more than Rs 100 million.
Nepal Armed Police Force has issued an advisory to the public to stay away from flooded rivers, despite the warning a man in Tanahun District went to collect wood from swollen Seti river and was swept away.
