In an unprecedented gesture, the government on Saturday marked the 200th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule with floral tributes at the Parliament House Complex, signalling formal recognition at the highest institutional level for the pioneering social reformer.
The ceremony was held at Prerna Sthal inside the Parliament premises, where President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes. Union Minister Virendra Kumar, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries were also present.
Leaders across the political spectrum paid homage to Phule, recalling his role in advancing education and social equality and his efforts towards the upliftment of marginalised communities. His work, particularly in promoting access to education and challenging caste hierarchies, continues to influence contemporary discourse on social justice.
Officials said the commemorative initiative is being coordinated by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, with programmes anchored at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre.
The event also marked the start of year-long nationwide celebrations from April 2026 to April 2027, announced by the Prime Minister, aimed at taking Phule’s message of education, equality and social reform to a wider audience.
The tribute, officials said, reflects a broader effort to foreground Phule’s legacy in the national narrative and reaffirm a commitment to building an inclusive society.
