Heavy rains over the past two days have led to severe flooding in Kailali district of western Nepal, displacing approximately 1,700 people and affecting more than 500 families.
The hardest-hit areas include Kailari Rural Municipality and the municipalities of Bhajani, Ghodaghodi, and Gaurigang
According to the District Administration Office in Kailali, floodwaters from the Kataini, Shibaganga, Kandra Pathraiya, and Mohana rivers have submerged local settlements, severely disrupting daily life. Many affected communities are now facing shortages of food and essential supplies.
Rescue operations are in full swing, with the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force (APF), and local municipalities coordinating efforts to assist those in need. In Bhajani alone, over 400 houses have been submerged. In Kailari, some families have sought refuge in the local ward office.
Lokmaya Chaudhary, a 45-year-old resident of Kailari-5, was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to leave her home. Chaudhary was later rescued and is now receiving treatment at Nisarga Hospital in Dhangadhi.
The situation remains critical as heavy rains continue to batter the region, causing water levels in both large and small rivers to rise. The local administration has asked residents in flood-risk areas to relocate to safer places immediately. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has also advised caution, especially for those living in low-lying and riverine areas.
