Nepal’s first Public Private Partnership establishment, Salt Trading Corporation (STC), celebrates its 62nd anniversary today. On the occasion, Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Minister Damodar Bhandari assured that there would be no shortage of food supplies during the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals.
STC CEO Urmila Shreshtha highlighted the company’s role in supplying essential goods like salt, sugar, flour, beaten rice, tea, LPG, and spices at reasonable prices. Additionally, STC has played a key role in combating iodine deficiency in Nepal by providing iodised salt since 1973, replacing rock salt. India has supported this initiative by offering transportation subsidies for iodised salt to Nepal’s mountainous regions.
STC is a major user of Indian railway services, transporting goods such as salt, sugar, and chemical fertilisers via 200 racks annually to dry ports in Nepal, including Birgunj, Jogbani, and Nepalgunj.
