Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stressed the need for year-round tourism in Uttarakhand, stating that “no season should be off-season” for the region.
Speaking at a public gathering in Harsil, he highlighted the economic benefits of sustained tourism and expressed his government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s economy through tourism development.
At the outset, the Prime Minister extended his condolences to the families affected by the recent tragic incident in Mana. He acknowledged the resilience and support of the people, stating that their unity had provided immense strength to those grieving their losses.
During his visit to Mukhwa, the winter abode of Goddess Ganga, PM Modi spoke about Uttarakhand’s deep spiritual significance. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit the sacred site, describing it as a place filled with divine energy. Reflecting on his personal connection with the state, he attributed his journey of public service to the blessings of Maa Ganga.
He recalled how he had been given the chance to serve Uttarakhand and later Kashi, believing it was through the goddess’s guidance. He further described his visit to Mukhwa as a homecoming, as he has always felt that Maa Ganga had adopted him.
The Prime Minister also reminisced about his bond with the people of Uttarakhand, especially the women who affectionately send him local produce.
“I fondly remember my ‘didi-bhulis’ (sisters) from here. They keep sending me the famous red grams of Harsil and other local products. I am truly grateful for your love,” he added.
He also highlighted the importance of winter tourism in Uttarakhand, emphasizing the need to break away from the seasonal nature of tourism, which peaks from March to June. He pointed out that after the monsoon, the number of visitors drops, leading to economic challenges. He stressed the necessity of keeping tourism active throughout the year, ensuring a steady flow of visitors and economic opportunities.
Speaking about the state’s potential, PM Modi described winter as a particularly special time to experience Uttarakhand. He spoke about the adventure activities the region offers, such as trekking and skiing, and how many pilgrimage sites hold unique rituals during the colder months. He also highlighted the cultural richness of village life, where age-old religious ceremonies continue to thrive.
He said that while much of the country is covered in fog during winter, Uttarakhand enjoys bright sunlight. He suggested branding winter tourism in Garhwali as “Gham taapo pariyatan,” meaning sun-bathe tourism, to attract visitors seeking a unique seasonal experience.
Praising the Uttarakhand government’s vision for year-round tourism, he said this initiative would provide travelers with diverse experiences while boosting local businesses. He pointed to the rapid infrastructure development in the state over the past decade, including the Char Dham All-Weather Road, modern expressways, expanded railway networks, air travel facilities, and helicopter services.
PM Modi also highlighted the Kedarnath and Hemkund ropeway projects, which will make religious travel more accessible, especially for elderly pilgrims, women, and children.
