Northern India Celebrates Lohri honoring tradition and community spirit

As Northern India, particularly the states of Haryana and Punjab, experiences a cold wave, the region is celebrating the harvest festival of Lohri on Monday. Lohri, a festival of gratitude, is observed to honoUr Lord Surya, the Sun God, for providing light and warmth to help crops grow.

The President of India extended her warm wishes on this auspicious occasion. In a message shared on her X account, she said:
On the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal and Magh Bihu, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Indian people living in the country and abroad.
These festivals are a symbol of our rich cultural heritage and unity in diversity. These festivals celebrated in different regions of India express respect for nature.
These festivals related to agriculture are also opportunities to express gratitude to our farmers for their tireless hard work.
I wish that this holy festival brings happiness and prosperity in the life of every person.”

Farmers, grateful for the fruits of their labor, gather around bonfires to celebrate with song, dance, and community joy. Popular Lohri songs such as “Sundari Mundari Ho…” fill the air as people dance the traditional Bhangra and Gidda. The festivities are marked by the sharing of sweets and snacks like peanuts, rewari, and other seasonal delicacies.

One of the stories closely associated with Lohri is that of Punjabi folk hero Rai Abdullah Khan Bhatti, also known as Dulla Bhatti. During Emperor Akbar’s reign, Dulla Bhatti led a revolt against Mughal rule. He became a symbol of protection when he saved two girls, Sundari and Mundri, from a corrupt landlord by adopting them and arranging their marriages. This story serves as a reminder of duty and loyalty, inspiring people to protect women and girls at all costs.

Lohri holds special significance for Punjabi families celebrating their first Lohri after marriage or the birth of a son. Friends and relatives gather to mark the occasion with joy and festivity. The festival embodies values of unity, love, and integrity, encouraging people to come together and share in the spirit of community.
