OpenAI launches ChatGPT Health to securely link medical records and wellness apps

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated feature designed to securely connect people’s medical records and wellness apps.

The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm developed the new experience in close collaboration with more than 260 physicians practicing across 60 countries.

“You can securely connect medical records and wellness apps to ground conversations in your own health information, making responses more relevant and useful. Designed with physicians, ChatGPT Health helps people take a more active role in understanding and managing their health and wellness—while supporting, not replacing, care from clinicians,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

The company noted that the feature comes amid high demand for health queries on ChatGPT, with over 230 million people worldwide asking health and wellness-related questions each week.

However, OpenAI emphasised that the feature is “designed to support, not replace, medical care.”

“It is not intended for diagnosis or treatment. Instead, it helps users navigate everyday questions and understand patterns over time—not just moments of illness—so they can feel more informed and prepared for important medical conversations,” it added.

With ChatGPT Health, users can securely connect medical records and wellness apps such as Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. The feature assists in decoding test results, preparing for doctor appointments, getting advice on diet and workout routines, or understanding trade-offs of different insurance options based on healthcare patterns.

OpenAI said it is taking several measures to protect sensitive health information beyond basic ChatGPT security. Users can delete chats from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, and the model has been trained not to retain personal information from user chats. Conversations and files are encrypted by default at rest, and individuals can further enhance security by enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA).

ChatGPT Health will initially be rolled out to a small group of early users to refine the experience. Users with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK are eligible.

In the coming weeks, OpenAI plans to expand access and make ChatGPT Health available to all users on the web and iOS. Medical record integrations and some apps are currently available only in the US, and connecting to Apple Health requires iOS.
