Over ₹2.94 lakh crore deposits in Jan Dhan accounts: Finance Minister

A total of 57.78 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) with a total deposit balance of ₹2,94,702 crore, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Providing details of the scheme, the Finance Minister said that 32.21 crore accounts, or 55.8 per cent, belong to women. She also noted that about 45.17 crore accounts, or 78.2 per cent, have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, reflecting the reach of financial inclusion initiatives.

Sitharaman also shared progress made under other social security schemes aimed at expanding financial access.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), a total of 26.88 crore cumulative enrolments have been recorded as of February 25. The scheme provides a life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh in case of death due to any reason.

Similarly, under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), 57.11 crore cumulative enrolments have been registered. The scheme offers a one-year accidental insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for death or permanent total disability and ₹1 lakh for permanent partial disability.

The Finance Minister said that the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has recorded 8.84 crore cumulative enrolments as of February 25. The scheme provides a guaranteed monthly pension to eligible subscribers after retirement.

Sitharaman also highlighted progress under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY). Under the scheme, 57.26 crore loans amounting to ₹39.48 lakh crore have been sanctioned to micro and small business units for income-generating activities across manufacturing, trading and service sectors, including activities related to agriculture.

Under the Stand-Up India Scheme, 2.75 lakh loans worth ₹62,790 crore have been sanctioned to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and women entrepreneurs for setting up greenfield enterprises in manufacturing, trading, services and agriculture-related sectors.

The Finance Minister also noted that the government has established the JAM trinity — Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile — to strengthen financial inclusion. The platform enables seamless delivery of welfare benefits through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) by linking bank accounts with Aadhaar and mobile numbers.
