Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said the Central government is “very sensitive” to the concerns of students, particularly issues related to competitive examination paper leaks, and asserted that swift action has been taken against those responsible.
In an interview with ANI, Sitharaman said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already assured strict action against those involved in compromising the integrity of examinations, including the establishment of fast-track courts to ensure speedy justice.
She said the issue of exam paper leaks and re-examinations is highly sensitive as it directly affects the careers of young aspirants. According to the Finance Minister, the government’s prompt response has addressed students’ concerns, making the opposition’s criticism unwarranted.
Sitharaman noted that authorities had arrested those involved in leaking, buying and selling examination papers even before the formal announcement of additional administrative measures.
Describing the accused as individuals who acted out of self-interest, she said they had jeopardised the future of thousands of students and have been taken into custody.
She added that the Prime Minister’s announcement of fast-track courts is intended to reassure students and their families that those responsible for undermining the sanctity of examinations will be punished swiftly.
Highlighting the government’s response to the crisis, Sitharaman said timely arrests, prompt re-examinations and the declaration of results have enabled students to continue with their higher education plans without prolonged disruption.
The Finance Minister also said that some students had used the additional preparation time after the re-examinations to improve their performance, demonstrating resilience despite the challenges.
