PM Modi expresses deep grief on passing away of founder of Sankara Nethralaya

Renowned vitreoretinal surgeon Dr Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath, founder of Shankara Nethralaya died on Tuesday. 83-year-old Badrinath was ill for some time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over his demise.

The Prime Minister posted on X (Formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. He wrote “Deeply saddened by the demise of visionary, ophthalmology expert and founder of Shankar Nethralaya Dr SS Badrinath ji. His contribution to eye care and his tireless service to society has left an indelible mark. His work will continue to inspire generations. Condolences to his family and loved ones. om Shanti.”

He is survived by his wife Dr Vasanthi Badrinath, a paediatrician and Hematologist, and two sons Ananth Badrinath and Seshu Badrinath.

Dr Badrinath was born on February 24, 1940, in Triplicane, Chennai. He lost both his parents while still in his teens and completed his medical studies from the life insurance policy money obtained following the demise of his father.

He was the recipient of Dr B. C. Roy National Award (1991), Padma Bhushan in 1999 from The Government of India, Padma Sri in 1983.

His demise is a great loss to the medical fraternity who expressed their deep sorrow and condolences to the bereaved family on social media.
