Savitribai Phule, renowned for her selfless dedication, spearheaded a revolution in women's upliftment and social reforms. A trailblazer in education, she staunchly advocated for the rights of women and the marginalized. Opposing repressive societal norms, Phule paved the way for the education and empowerment of millions of girls.
Savitribai Phule – Early Life
Born on January 3, 1831, in Maharashtra’s Satara district to Lakshmi and Khandoji Nevase Patil, Savitribai Phule got married to social activist Jyotirao Phule at the age of nine. Despite social opposition, her husband, Jyotirao, taught her to read and write and helped her attend a teacher’s training institution.
First Female Teacher of India
Having completed her primary education, Savitribai enrolled in teacher’s training programs in Ahmednagar and Pune. Following her training, she began teaching girls in Maharwada, Pune, with the assistance of her husband’s mentor, Sagunabai. In 1848, the couple established the country’s first girls’ school at Bhide Wada in Pune. Despite threats from higher caste individuals, they opened a total of 18 schools, providing education to children from different castes—an uncommon feat for that time.
In her pursuit of gender justice, Savitribai Phule faced criticism and threats, advocating against child marriage and Sati Pratha. She founded the Mahila Seva Mandal to champion women’s education rights and widow remarriage.
Legacy and Recognition
Acknowledging Savitribai Phule's immense contribution to education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) instituted the 'Savitribai Jyoti Rao Phule Fellowship' for single girl child. This fellowship aims to support a single girl’s education and encourage her to pursue research leading to a Ph.D. degree, with a total duration of five years.
