PM Modi speaks to Tarique Rahman, highlights strong bilateral ties with Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman and congratulated him on the BNP’s election victory. He said the Indian government is committed to “the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples.”

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: “Delighted to speak with Mr. Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I conveyed my best wishes and support in his endeavour to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.”

He added: “As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi extended his congratulations to Rahman after the decisive win in the elections. In his message, the PM said the victory reflects the deep trust and confidence the people of Bangladesh have placed in Rahman’s leadership. He described the outcome as an important moment in Bangladesh’s democratic journey and reaffirmed India’s continued support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.

Highlighting the longstanding ties between the two neighbours, the PM emphasized India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across sectors. He expressed optimism about working closely with Rahman to further deepen multifaceted relations, including trade, connectivity, development partnerships, and people-to-people exchanges.

The BNP is set to stake claim to form the government in Bangladesh after 20 years, having won more than 200 seats in the general elections.
