Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to maintain a strong approval rating, with significant support from citizens, particularly in the Northern and Western regions of the country, according to the latest Ipsos IndiaBus PM’s Approval Rating survey.
The survey revealed that PM Modi’s approval ratings for February 2025 stood at 68%, reflecting sustained public confidence in his leadership. Support was particularly pronounced in North India, where 86% of respondents expressed approval of his governance. The Western region also showed strong backing, with 74% of respondents endorsing the government’s performance.
Urban populations in Tier 1 cities displayed a high level of confidence in the Modi government, with 78% approval, a trend likely driven by infrastructural development and improved quality of life.
However, the survey highlighted a stark regional contrast in approval ratings. In the Southern states, only 32% of respondents supported the Modi government, suggesting a preference for local and regional leadership over the central administration.
Parijat Chakraborty, Group Service Line Leader at Ipsos India, attributed the Prime Minister’s strong ratings to economic stability and key policy measures. “The government’s budget provided relief to the middle class through tax breaks, ensuring greater disposable income. Additionally, the recent 25-basis-point cut in the RBI’s repo rate has made borrowing more affordable. The extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for five years from January 1, 2024, under Amrit Kaal, has also significantly benefited citizens,” he noted.
The survey assessed the government’s performance across multiple sectors, including education, sanitation, healthcare, corruption, and pollution. Education emerged as the most highly rated area, with 65% of respondents approving of the Modi government’s initiatives. Sanitation and hygiene followed, garnering positive feedback from 49% of participants.
Chakraborty pointed to the government’s education policies as a major factor in public approval. “Initiatives such as promoting education for the girl child, free mid-day meals in Aanganwadis, the establishment of new education hubs, specialized courses in urban centers, and the Skill India program to enhance employability have contributed to the positive perception of Modi’s governance,” he said.
As the political landscape evolves, the Ipsos survey underscores PM Modi’s continued strong public support, particularly in key regions, while also highlighting the contrasting political preferences across different parts of the country.
