The government’s flagship rural housing scheme, Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), has so far enabled the completion of more than 2.82 crore houses across the country, with the overall target now extended to 4.95 crore homes by 2029, official data shows.
Launched on April 1, 2016, PMAY-G aims to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to houseless families and those living in kutcha dwellings. The Union Cabinet recently cleared its continuation for another five years, adding 2 crore houses to the original target of 2.95 crore.
As of August 4, 2025, out of 4.12 crore houses allocated to states and Union Territories, 3.85 crore have been sanctioned and over 2.82 crore completed, according to the Ministry of Rural Development.
The programme emphasizes inclusivity, with beneficiaries identified using Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data, verified by Gram Sabhas, and supplemented by Awaas+ surveys. At least 60 per cent of the houses are earmarked for SC/ST households, while over 2.68 lakh landless families have also been sanctioned homes.
Each house is built to a minimum size of 25 sq. m, including a cooking area, with financial assistance of ₹1.20 lakh in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh in hilly states. The Centre and states share costs in a 60:40 ratio, while Northeastern and Himalayan states follow a 90:10 pattern.
The scheme has also been a source of rural employment. Construction of 2.82 crore houses has generated around 568 crore person-days of work in the last nine years, largely through convergence with MGNREGS. Nearly 3 lakh masons have been trained, with some securing jobs abroad.
To ensure transparency, Aadhaar-based Direct Benefit Transfers, geo-tagged photographs, and real-time monitoring via the AwaasSoft MIS and the Awaas+ 2024 mobile app have been deployed. Artificial intelligence and machine learning tools are being used to detect anomalies and curb fraud.
PMAY-G also converges with other schemes to ensure beneficiaries receive toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission, LPG connections under Ujjwala, electricity under Saubhagya and piped drinking water through Jal Jeevan Mission.
