Rain-induced landslides and floods claim 173 lives in Nepal

Transportation at Daunne of Nawalpur in Sudurpashchim of western Nepal has been disrupted due to road subsidence last night. Only one-way traffic is allowed at Daunne section along the East-West Highway to repair the road that caved in. The maintenance work is being carried out to prevent further damage.

While two houses collapsed in Dilashaini of Baitadi in Gandaki province due to a landslide triggered by rain and two other houses are also at risk due to the landslide. The property was completely damaged but there was no loss of life.

A total of 173 people lost their lives in natural disasters including landslides and floods that occurred at different places of the country till this afternoon from June 10. According to the Nepal Police Report, three persons died in Kathmandu Valley, 26 in Koshi Province, seven in Madhes Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, eight in Karnali Province and 11 in Sudurpaschim Province.

Similarly, 223 people sustained injuries of which 11 were from Kathmandu Valley, 37 were from Koshi Province, 11 from Madhes Province, 23 were from Bagmati Province, 46 were from Gandaki Province, 13 were from Lumbini Province, 54 from Karnali Province and 28 from Sudurpaschim Province.

Twenty-eight people affected by landslide and flood were rescued in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi Province, 12 in Bagmati Province, 14 in Gandaki Province, three in Lumbini Province, two in Karnali Province and five in Sudurpaschim Province.

Two persons went missing in Koshi Province, 41 in Bagmati Province, two in Gandaki Province, and one each in Lumbini Province, Karnali Province and Sudurpaschim Province. Search for the missing people is underway by Nepal police.

A total of 384 houses were inundated due to floods while 275 houses, 104 huts, 43 bridges, two school buildings and two government offices suffered damages.

Spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki informed that 4,322 families were displaced from the disaster incidents as well as 812 cattle died during the period.
