Setting up nuclear power unit in space is priority for Russia: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently highlighted the importance of focusing on space projects, including the development of a nuclear power unit in space, during discussions with government officials.

At a meeting with government members, Putin talked about Russia’s competencies and reserves, stating that they are assets to be proud of and relied upon for future endeavors. He specifically mentioned a nuclear power unit intended for space operations as an example of these capabilities.

“It’s crucial to ensure timely financing for these projects,” Putin said. He stressed the need to set clear priorities, as certain issues require additional attention.

“We must give special attention to fostering the development of our unique competencies, which other countries do not possess. These technologies should be utilized to address future challenges.”

Yuri Borisov, the head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, recently announced a collaboration with China on a project to deploy a nuclear reactor on the moon. Borisov mentioned plans to transport and install the power reactor on the moon jointly with Chinese partners between 2033 and 2035.

In March 2021, Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration signed a memorandum for cooperation in establishing an International Lunar Research Station.

As per sources, Russia is developing a nuclear space weapon capable of severely damaging commercial and government satellites. This weapon, known as a nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapon among military space experts, could disrupt satellites in Earth’s orbit by emitting electromagnetic energy and highly charged particles.

While this weapon is still in development and has not been deployed, officials from the Biden administration have warned that its use would mark a dangerous shift in nuclear weaponry history.

The potential impact of this weapon on everyday life is uncertain but could result in significant disruptions.
