Two-Day Orientation Programme for New Rajya Sabha Members to Begin Tomorrow

A two-day orientation programme for newly elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha will begin on July 25, with Chairman of the Rajya Sabha C.P. Radhakrishnan set to inaugurate the interactive programme aimed at familiarising members with parliamentary procedures, legislative responsibilities and the functioning of the Upper House.

Organised by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, the programme will be held on July 25 and 26 to help new members better understand the functioning of Parliament, particularly the Rajya Sabha, through interactive sessions led by experienced parliamentarians and senior officials of the Secretariat.

The programme will commence with a welcome address by Deputy Chairman Harivansh, while Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan will deliver the keynote address outlining the vision, responsibilities and role of members of the Rajya Sabha.

As part of the programme, Harivansh will also address participants on the functions and role of key parliamentary committees.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who holds the portfolios of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, will conduct a hands-on information technology session focusing on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain technology and data privacy laws on future legislation and public service delivery.

The orientation programme will also feature interactive sessions by senior Rajya Sabha members, including Dr. John Brittas, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Sujeet Kumar and Pramod Tiwari, who are expected to share their legislative experience and insights into parliamentary functioning.

Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha P.C. Mody will brief the participants on the structure, functions and services of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and deliver the formal expression of gratitude at the conclusion of the programme.

Senior officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat will conduct sessions on various aspects of parliamentary procedures and legislative business, while Secretary K.S. Somashekhar will deliver the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of the two-day orientation programme.
