US defense secretary lauds ties with India, calls jet engine deal revolutionary

US defense secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday praised the strong ties between the United States and India, highlighting the “revolutionary” agreement between American and Indian companies for manufacturing jet engines. He also emphasized the joint production of an armoured vehicle as a significant advancement in enhancing capabilities.

The jet engine deal was revealed in June last year during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official state visit to the US.

Austin made these comments while testifying before the Senate panel on the 2025 budget. He stressed the importance of these joint ventures in promoting interoperability and strengthening the ability to respond to various challenges.

In early 2023, US General Electric (US GE) announced an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to jointly manufacture engines in India for the Indian Air Force’s fighter jets.

Notably, the Biden Administration informed the US Congress in February of its intention to sell approximately $4 billion worth of arms, primarily consisting of MQ-9 B Drones armed with Hellfire missiles.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency, a part of the US Department of Defence, stated in a press release that this sale strengthens the strategic relationship between the US and India. It also acknowledged India’s role as an essential force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region.
