WAVES 2025: India’s creator economy set to influence over $1 trillion in consumer spending by 2030, says BCG report

India’s digital landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by the rapid rise of its creator economy. A forthcoming report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), titled “From Content to Commerce: Mapping India’s Creator Economy”, is set to be officially launched at WAVES 2025, a premier digital media summit taking place in Mumbai.

The report reveals that India’s digital creators are now influencing over $350 billion in consumer spending annually — a figure projected to surpass $1 trillion by the end of the decade.

This landmark study captures the scale and impact of the creator ecosystem, which now comprises between 2 and 2.5 million active creators across the country. These are individuals with more than 1,000 followers who regularly produce digital content across platforms. Despite this growing base, only 8 to 10 percent of creators currently monetize their content effectively, indicating a vast, untapped economic potential waiting to be unlocked.

BCG estimates that the creator economy’s direct revenues currently stand at $20–25 billion, with projections indicating a fivefold growth to reach $100–125 billion by 2030. This growth will be driven by a confluence of factors, including diversified revenue streams, broader geographic reach, evolving brand strategies, and rising digital consumption across the country.

Short-form video continues to dominate as the preferred content format, with comedy, film-related content, daily soaps, and fashion emerging as the most consumed genres. While the early wave of creators primarily came from metropolitan cities and Gen Z demographics, the ecosystem is now expanding into smaller towns and a wider range of age groups, reflecting the democratization of digital content creation and consumption.

Brands are quickly adapting to this shift. Traditional marketing strategies are giving way to dynamic content production cycles that prioritize authenticity, speed, and direct engagement. There is also a growing focus on creative freedom for influencers and an emphasis on measurable outcomes, signaling a significant evolution in how brands collaborate with creators.

Monetization models are also evolving. Beyond brand endorsements and platform payouts, creators are increasingly exploring consumer-funded avenues such as virtual gifting, live commerce, and subscription-based models. These innovations are enabling creators to build more sustainable and diversified income streams, independent of traditional ad-based revenues.

In response to this shift, brand investments in creator-driven marketing are expected to scale significantly — potentially increasing by 1.5 to 3 times in the coming years. This marks a broader transformation in the marketing and commerce landscape, as businesses increasingly recognize the value of creator-led engagement in driving consumer decisions.

The release of the BCG report at WAVES 2025 comes at a time when conversations around AI, social media, the AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics) sector, and India’s film industry are dominating the national digital media narrative. These discussions underscore India’s growing influence in the global digital economy and the central role its creator community is poised to play.
