Defence ministry inks Rs.1614 crore deal with Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders for 6 offshore patrol vessels

The deal, finalised on December 20, 2023, marks the procurement of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) destined for service with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Valued at Rs 1614.89 Crore, the acquisition falls under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, affirming the commitment to bolster indigenous capabilities.

The six NGOPVs, an embodiment of cutting-edge maritime technology, constitute a pivotal advancement for the ICG. Four of these vessels are slated to replace aging Offshore Patrol Vessels, while the remaining two will reinforce the existing ICG fleet. These high-tech vessels are slated to revolutionise maritime operations, elevating the ICG's capabilities across surveillance, law enforcement, search and rescue missions, maritime pollution response, and humanitarian assistance endeavors.

At 115 meters in length, these state-of-theart OPVs are not only equipped with advanced features but also host a suite of sophisticated enhancements, including Multipurpose Drones, AI integration, and Wirelessly Controlled Remote Water Rescue Craft Lifebuoys. These additions bolster the ICG's adaptability and operational prowess, enabling them to navigate the challenges of contemporary multidimensional maritime security.

Emphasising indigenous prowess, these multi-role vessels will be entirely designed, developed, and manufactured by MDL, Mumbai. Within a timeline of 66 months, these vessels will be delivered, affirming the commitment to self-reliance encapsulated by the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

This endeavour aligns with the larger vision to bolster India's shipbuilding capabilities, foster economic growth in the maritime sector, and catalyze the development of ancillary industries, particularly the MSME sector.

Furthermore, the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities and expertise within the country.
