India’s global image redefined under PM Modi, says Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy has redefined India’s global image, shifting from a reactive approach to an assertive, strategic one. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar outlined how India’s diplomatic posture under PM Modi has strengthened national security and global influence.

The EAM said earlier governments prioritized dialogue even amid terror threats, but the current administration follows a policy of “diplomatic strength backed by military resolve,” enhancing India’s ability to protect its interests.

Citing Operation Sindoor as both a military and diplomatic success, Jaishankar said the global support India received—over 190 countries expressing solidarity—reflected the credibility gained under the Prime Minister’s leadership.

The foreign minister credited PM Modi’s vision for transforming foreign policy into a strategy that integrates economic diplomacy, defence cooperation, and cultural outreach. India’s strengthened ties with the U.S., Japan, Australia, and European nations were highlighted as examples.

On multilateral success, Jaishankar pointed to BRICS and the Maldives. While India’s ties with the Maldives had frayed under UPA rule, he said PM Modi’s recent invitation as Guest of Honour for their Independence Day, and India’s role in building two airports, marked a restored relationship. Despite differences, BRICS nations—including China and Russia—condemned the Pahalgam attack, which he termed a diplomatic win.

Jaishankar noted that India has moved away from rhetorical responses to terrorism, instead presenting evidence-based cases on global platforms and demanding accountability, particularly from Pakistan. He also highlighted PM Modi’s focus on economic diplomacy. The EAM said reforms like Make in India and improved ease of doing business have boosted foreign investment, helping India become one of the fastest-growing major economies.

The external affairs minister praised PM Modi’s outreach to the Indian diaspora as a tool of soft power, building goodwill across regions.

India’s vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 crisis, he added, was another example of the compassionate and strategic dimensions of PM Modi’s foreign policy, enhancing India’s global reputation as a responsible leader.
