Parliament adjourned till Dec 2 amid opposition protests

Parliament proceedings were adjourned till December 2 on Friday, as opposition members continued their protests, preventing any significant business from taking place for the fourth consecutive day. The disruptions were triggered by demands from opposition parties for discussions on critical issues, including the Adani Group allegations, violence in Manipur and Sambhal, and law and order concerns in Delhi.

The Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, was the first to be adjourned. Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, expressed frustration over the ongoing disruptions, labeling them “not public-centric.” He criticized the opposition for creating a negative image, stating that these actions had made Parliament a “laughing stock” and that they were setting a “bad precedent.” He also accused opposition members of weaponizing Rule 267, which is typically used for raising urgent matters, as a tool for disruption.

The opposition parties have remained adamant about having a discussion on the Adani issue, Sambhal violence, and the situation in Manipur. They have been raising slogans during the sessions to press their demand for immediate debates on these matters.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh attacked the central government and said that the “big mystery” is why the government is not resisting the adjournments.

“Yet another day of a washout in the Parliament on the Modani issue. Both Houses got adjourned today after only a few minutes. The big mystery is why the Govt is not resisting the adjournments. On the contrary, the government is facilitating the aggression of the INDIA parties on Modani especially – as also on Manipur, Sambhal, and Delhi’s law and order. Clearly it has much to feel defensive and apologetic about,” Ramesh posted on X.

Adani Group has refuted the bribery allegations made in the United States. Adani Green Energy Ltd said in a statement that media articles which claimed “that certain of its directors, namely Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vineet Jaain have been charged with violation(s) of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the indictment are incorrect.”

The winter Parliament commenced on November 25, with both Houses getting adjourned fairly early due to disruptions. It will conclued on till December 20. (ANI)
