PM Modi, Starmer discuss trade, technology, and security during UK PM’s first India visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his first official visit to India, describing the trip as a reflection of renewed energy and strengthened bilateral partnership.

Addressing the media, PM Modi highlighted the progress in India–UK relations under Starmer’s leadership. He recalled the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) concluded during his July visit to the UK, saying the deal would reduce import costs, create employment opportunities for youth, boost trade, and benefit industries and consumers in both countries.

“The timing of this visit, accompanied by the largest-ever UK business delegation to India, reflects the new energy and broad vision driving the India–UK partnership,” the PM said.

On strategic and global issues, the Prime Minister emphasized that India and the UK share common values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. He said the leaders discussed peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia, as well as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. India supports all efforts to restore peace through dialogue and diplomacy and remains committed to enhancing maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Highlighting technology and innovation, PM Modi discussed the India–UK Technology Security Initiative, joint research centers in artificial intelligence and connectivity, and collaboration on critical minerals with a satellite campus at ISM Dhanbad. He also welcomed the formation of the India–UK Offshore Wind Taskforce and the Climate Technology Startup Fund, aimed at supporting innovators and entrepreneurs from both countries.

Emphasizing education and defense, PM Modi said that UK universities are opening campuses in India, including Southampton University’s Gurugram campus, while construction is underway for three other university campuses in GIFT City. He added that defense collaboration is expanding through co-production and military training agreements, with Indian Air Force flying instructors serving as trainers in the UK’s Royal Air Force.

Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged the contribution of 1.8 million Indians living in the UK, describing them as a “living bridge” that strengthens friendship, cooperation, and development between the two nations.

PM Modi said, “India’s dynamism and the United Kingdom’s expertise together create a unique synergy. Our partnership is trustworthy, talent- and technology-driven, and a clear reaffirmation of our shared commitment to building a brighter future for the people of both our nations.”
