Live Creation of Tribal Paintings: Odisha Showcases Cultural Richness in Dubai

The Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, under the Department of Odia Language, Literature & Culture, hosted the first-ever Odishan Tribal Artists’ Camp in Dubai. Fifteen renowned tribal artists from Odisha participated in the event. The event has garnered attention for its live creation of tribal paintings, offering spectators a rare glimpse into the intricate process of tribal art forms. The artists created works inspired by their rich tribal heritage, particularly the cultures of the Sauras, Santhals, Kolahs, Kandhas, and Parajas. These artworks often depict themes related to their festive ceremonies.

A ceremonial inauguration marked the unveiling of the completed paintings, attended by Sudarshan Patnaik, renowned sand artist and President of Odisha Lalit Kala Academy and Consul General of India Satish Sivan, who emphasized the significance of providing a platform for often-overlooked artists. He lauded the event as an opportunity to showcase the exceptional talent and cultural richness of Odisha’s tribal communities on a global stage. Odisha boasts a long and celebrated artistic tradition.

The state’s impressive collection of paintings dates back to the prehistoric era. This tribal artist camp serves as a platform for these skilled individuals to showcase their unique styles and the rich aesthetic traditions of their communities. Utilizing acrylic paints on canvas, the participating artists captured the essence of their tribal cultures through their distinctive styles. Among the featured styles is Saura art, a revered form of mural painting with deep religious significance among the Saura tribe.

The initiative by the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi is expected to bridge the gap in international awareness of Odisha’s dynamic tribal art scene, providing a platform for these skilled artisans to showcase their talents and preserve the cultural legacy of their communities for generations to come. The event was held at the Hyatt Place Dubai Al Rigga and was coordinated by FICCI Dubai. The live creation of art forms began on the 12th, and the exhibition of the same was inaugurated on March 14th.
