SRFTI to host ARCUREA 2024: An International Event on Archiving, Curation, Restoration

The Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), is set to host ARCUREA 2024 – a pioneering event dedicated to the archiving, curation, and restoration of films. Scheduled from March 16 to 22, the event promises a comprehensive exploration of cinema’s rich heritage and its evolving role in contemporary society.

ARCUREA 2024 will feature a diverse array of activities aimed at fostering dialogue and innovation within the realm of film preservation and presentation. Among the highlights are:

International Colloquium on Archiving and Restoration: An esteemed gathering of industry experts will delve into film’s status as cultural heritage, examining topics ranging from Asian film restoration to the impact of digital technology on preservation efforts.

Cinema Curation Workshop: Designed for aspiring curators, this workshop will provide invaluable insights into the theory and practice of curating cinema, with a special focus on the rich tapestry of Indian filmmaking.

Festival of Restored Films: Audiences will have the opportunity to experience timeless cinematic masterpieces, painstakingly restored as part of the National Film Heritage Mission, celebrating India’s cinematic diversity and heritage.

Curators’ Picks: Eminent curators will present curated film programs, offering audiences a glimpse into the meticulous process of curatorial selection and presentation.

e-Conversations: Renowned filmmakers, including Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Asghar Farhadi, will engage in online discussions, providing insights into their creative processes and perspectives on the future of cinema.

Live Performances: ARCUREA will showcase innovative live performances that challenge traditional notions of film archives and their relevance in contemporary artistic expression.

Exhibition of Film Memorabilia: An immersive exhibition will celebrate the history and artistry of cinema, inviting visitors to engage with film history, curation, and restoration in a dynamic and interactive setting.

Pramod Pati Cinema Art and Technology Museum: Named in honor of pioneering filmmaker Pramod Pati, this museum will offer a comprehensive journey through the evolution of filmmaking, serving as a valuable resource for students, researchers, and cinema enthusiasts.

P.K. Nair Commemoration Lecture: Esteemed psychoanalyst and author, Dr. Sudhir Kakar, will deliver a public lecture honoring the legacy of P.K. Nair, founder-director of the NFAI, whose contributions to film archiving are immeasurable.

Keynote Address by Naomi Kawase: Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Naomi Kawase will deliver the keynote address, underscoring the global significance of ARCUREA 2024 and its mission to celebrate and preserve cinema’s cultural legacy.
