World Kidney Day 2024: Raising awareness to achieve kidney health for all

World Kidney Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of March, aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting kidneys from various diseases that can impair their normal functioning.

This year’s theme, “Kidney Health For All – Advancing Equitable Access To Care And Optimal Medication Practice,” highlights the growing burden of chronic kidney disease and the need for equitable access to optimal kidney care to overcome these challenges.

The kidneys are vital organs in the human body. They help eliminate toxins from the body to maintain overall fitness and health. Symptoms of kidney disorder include swelling in legs, high blood pressure, low haemoglobin levels, and brittle bones.

Dr Dipankar Bhowmik, Head of Department of Nephrology, AIIMS New Delhi, said that regular health checkup is a must for early detection of kidney diseases. He also advised regular physical exercise, a balanced diet, controlling weight, and limiting salt intake to prevent kidney disorders.

Government Initiatives:

The central government has undertaken several initiatives to help patients suffering from kidney diseases access affordable treatment and care.

The Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP), launched in 2016, aims to provide free dialysis at district hospitals to kidney patients living below the poverty line (BPL).

Treatment for kidney diseases is also available through Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).

Additionally, families living below the poverty line can avail financial assistance for kidney ailments under the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi and Health Minister’s Discretionary Grant (HMDG).
